Cabbage Soup Diet Continued...
Most proponents advise that it should only be followed for one week.
The Cabbage Soup Diet plan follows a very strict regiment. You can eat as much cabbage soup as you wish to feel full on a daily basis. This is to ensure that you do not feel the urge to cheat. There are other specific foods that are consumed on each of the seven day diet. Additionally, alcohol is not allowed and you are limited to drinking water and unsweetened fruit juice on days when fruit is allowed.
Cabbage soup recipes vary, however they all include cabbage, green peppers, carrots, onions, celery, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, and onion soup mix.
Sample Seven Day Menu
The following is a sample seven day menu:
Have all the Cabbage soup you desire plus:
Day 1 - As much fruit as desired (excluding bananas)
Day 2 - Vegetables including 1 baked potato with little butter
Day 3 - Fruit and vegetables (excluding potatoes and bananas)
Day 4 - Up to eight bananas and as much skimmed milk as desired
Day 5 - Up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes
Day 6 - As much beef and vegetables (excluding potatoes) as desired
Day 7 - Brown rice, vegetables (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice
How Effective is the Cabbage Soup Diet?
Initially, most people who follow this diet very quickly lose weight . However, the weight loss is arrived from the loss of water and muscle tissue and not from the desired fat reserves. The foods that are allowed will usually force most people to near starvation on a daily basis. This can be counter-productive to most people because starving the body only slows metabolism and forces the body to retain its fat reserves.
The Cabbage Soup Diet plan does requires a lot of planning and often several trips to the supermarket to keep up with the supply of necessary fruits and vegetables. Additionally, it may require cooking separate meals for your other family members who are not participating in the diet.
This is a short-term diet that is more of a "quick fix" to lose weight rather than a healthy, long term dieting plan. Also the weight lost is usually quickly gained back once normal eating habits are resumed.
Potential Cabbage Soup Diet Health Risks
Since this diet is only to be followed for seven days, people in good health should not experience any long-term health issues. However, if you follow any special dietary requirements, including diabetes, you should consult your doctor prior to beginning the cabbage soup diet. Regardless of health, no one should remain on the diet beyond the seven days. Although the cabbage soup ingredients are mostly healthy, the stock used, as well as the soup mix can be very high in sodium. Additionally, the cabbage diet is deficient in protein, carbohydrate and essential fats, so long term use can result in health issues.
